In Greenland, a birth, a birthday, a first day of school, a confirmation or a wedding calls for a kaffemik. The word means 'via coffee'.

The host often prepares for days. Then the house is open all day, and 50 or more family, friends and colleagues come and go. Guests take off their shoes, say 'Welcome!' and 'Congratulations!', and find fresh coffee waiting.

The table can hold crowberry muffins and marzipan cookies, or full meals with reindeer or muskox, fish soup and lumpfish roe.

What we couldn't confirm

Added as a strong remote story; Greenland is geographically North American but part of the Kingdom of Denmark, so check for overlap with the Americas file. Both sources are tourism bodies. Claims linking kaffemik to Danish colonisation in 1721 came only from search snippets and were left out. Denmark itself was dropped (no strong distinct story sourced).
